At least seven persons have been confirmed dead after suspected armed herders attacked a border community in Logo Local Government Area of Benue State on Sunday night. The assault, which occurred around 11 pm, left several others injured and forced residents to flee.

No fewer than seven persons have been killed following a late-night attack by suspected armed herders in Channel One community, located in Ukemberagya/Tswarev Council Ward of Logo Local Government Area, Benue State.

The attack, which reportedly occurred around 11 pm on Sunday, saw gunmen storm the border settlement along the Arufu-Wukari road, opening fire indiscriminately and causing panic among residents.

A resident, who identified himself as Amos, told journalists via telephone that the attackers shot sporadically, forcing villagers to flee for safety.

A community leader, Joseph Anawah, who confirmed the incident, said six victims were initially identified, including Akor Gwakyaa, Msooter Gwakyaa, Aondoungwa Michael, Vershima Michael, Terna Michael, and Msughter Terzungwe.

He added that several others sustained serious injuries and were receiving treatment in medical facilities in Anyiin and Ugba towns.

According to Anawah, the attackers, believed to be armed Fulani herders, arrived in large numbers on motorcycles and were heavily armed. He alleged that the assailants may have originated from a suspected camp in Shaor, a deserted village previously flagged in intelligence reports.

“The attackers came in large numbers and operated freely before retreating. Many residents have now fled their homes over fears of further attacks,” he said.

Chairman of Logo LGA, Clement Kav, also confirmed the incident, stating that seven people were killed while four others were injured.

“They came, carried out the killings and retreated. I have already briefed the Commissioner of Police and the Special Adviser on Homeland Security,” he said.

Efforts to get official confirmation from the Benue State Police Command were ongoing, as the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, said she was yet to receive full details of the incident as of the time of filing this report.

The latest attack adds to a growing wave of violence in Benue State. In recent days, similar incidents have been recorded in Agatu and Ushongo LGAs, raising concerns over escalating insecurity across the region.

Community leaders have called for urgent intervention, including coordinated security operations and inter-state collaboration among Benue, Nasarawa, and Taraba states to curb cross-border attacks.
