A 20-year-old aspiring engineer from Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State has drawn attention after successfully building a car and a tricycle despite lacking formal training. His journey, however, has been marked by financial hardship and limited support.

A young innovator, Terver Jude Orfega, from Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State, is gaining attention for his self-driven efforts in automobile construction despite significant personal and financial challenges.

Orfega, who is 20 years old, reportedly began building vehicles while attending Technical School in Makurdi, driven by a strong passion for engineering and creativity. Using locally sourced materials such as iron, aluminium, plastic, and battery components, he has successfully constructed both a tricycle (popularly known as keke) and a car.

According to information made available, the young inventor had to discontinue his education at the Junior Secondary School (JSS3) level due to lack of funding. His situation was further compounded by the death of his father, leaving his mother, a peasant farmer, to shoulder the burden of supporting the family.

Despite these setbacks, Orfega continued to pursue his interest in mechanical innovation without formal mentorship or structured training. However, he is said to be facing ongoing challenges, particularly in accessing funds to acquire materials and professional support, including assistance from skilled welders.

Speaking on his situation, Orfega expressed the need for financial assistance to enable him to expand his work and improve on his designs. He also highlighted the absence of a mentor or training support as a major limitation to his growth.

His story underscores the potential of grassroots innovation in Nigeria and the challenges faced by young talents in accessing the resources needed to thrive.

Observers say with adequate support, training, and investment, talents like Orfega could contribute meaningfully to local manufacturing and technological development.
