The Benue State Police Command has arrested a 23-year-old man, Abdullahi Usman, in connection with the killing of Benue State University lecturer, Professor Gabriel Saawua Nyityo, and his younger brother, Iorngee John Nyityo. Police said investigations are ongoing to apprehend other suspects linked to the attack.
The Benue State Police Command says it has arrested a suspect in connection with the killing of Professor Gabriel Saawua Nyityo of Benue State University and his younger brother, Iorngee John Nyityo.
The Command's spokesperson, DSP Udeme Edet, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday in Makurdi.
According to the statement, officers attached to the 'D' Division responded to a distress call from the Adaka area of Makurdi, where they discovered the bodies of the victims.
Police identified the deceased as Professor Gabriel Saawua Nyityo, 58, and his younger brother, Iorngee John Nyityo, 19, who were allegedly killed by gunmen.
The Command said a 23-year-old suspect, Abdullahi Usman, from Awe Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, has been arrested in connection with the incident.
According to the police, investigations are ongoing to identify and arrest other suspects believed to have participated in the attack.
Professor Nyityo, a lecturer in the Department of History at Benue State University, and his brother were reportedly attacked and killed at their residence in the Adaka community of Makurdi during the early hours of Wednesday.
The incident has generated widespread grief within the university community and among residents of Adaka, especially as the institution's lecturers are currently on strike.
Police have urged members of the public with useful information to cooperate with investigators as efforts continue to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the killings.
