A renewed political exchange in Benue State has brought former Governor Samuel Ortom and Governor Hyacinth Alia into sharp disagreement over allegations of financial mismanagement and audit findings. While Ortom rejects claims of a ₦139.8 billion discrepancy as politically driven, the current administration maintains that ongoing financial reviews are part of routine governance oversight.
Tensions in Benue State’s political landscape have escalated following renewed exchanges between former Governor Samuel Ortom and Governor Hyacinth Alia over the handling of state finances and accountability records.
Ortom, speaking in Makurdi, dismissed a reported probe suggesting his administration could not account for ₦139.8 billion, describing it as politically motivated and lacking credibility. He accused the current administration of hypocrisy and alleged continued mismanagement of state resources.
In a more politically charged tone, the former governor challenged Governor Alia to a public debate comparing governance records across both administrations. He also signaled a shift toward political reconciliation, notably calling for unity with Senator George Akume and urging broader political cooperation beyond party divisions.
On the other hand, the Alia administration defended the ongoing financial review process. Through the Chief Press Secretary, the government stated that the exercise is part of standard administrative oversight aimed at reviewing inherited financial records and handover documents.
Officials emphasized that similar audits and probe panels have historically been established by successive governments in Benue State, framing the current review as consistent with past governance practices rather than political retaliation.
The administration also pointed to concerns over inherited debt obligations, garnishee orders affecting state finances, and what it described as systemic administrative irregularities.
The exchange reflects a long-standing pattern in Benue politics, where transitions between administrations are frequently accompanied by audit panels, counter-accusations, and competing narratives over fiscal accountability.
