The Catholic Bishop of Makurdi Diocese, Most Rev. Wilfred Anagbe, has urged governments at all levels to abandon resettlement plans for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Benue State, insisting that the only sustainable solution is to return them to their ancestral homes under adequate security.
Bishop Anagbe made the call during the 2026 Cathedradicum at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Makurdi. His remarks come amid ongoing debates over how best to address displacement caused by persistent attacks in parts of the state.
The cleric stressed that most IDPs are farmers whose livelihoods depend on access to their ancestral lands. According to him, relocating them to new settlements would neither restore their economic stability nor address the root causes of displacement.
He warned that abandoning ancestral communities could expose them to occupation by attackers, further complicating the security situation.
Anagbe maintained that government has the capacity to facilitate safe returns by strengthening security, particularly in border communities.
“The only durable solution is to return them to their ancestral homes with adequate security,” he said.
Reflecting on his advocacy, the bishop noted, “When I started speaking out, I was criticised, but I remained resolute because of what our people are going through.”
He added that his efforts were aimed at ending the violence and enabling residents to resume normal life.
Earlier, the Dean of the High Level Deanery, Rev. Fr. Peter Paleve, commended the bishop’s leadership and consistent advocacy for affected communities, urging continued support for peace-building efforts.
