The Katsina State Government has confirmed the death of retired Major General Abubakar Rabe, a former Director of Defence Information, while in bandits' captivity. Rabe was abducted alongside his wife about two weeks ago in Katsina State while travelling for a wedding ceremony. Authorities said he died from complications arising from diabetes and hypertension.

Retired Major General Abubakar Rabe, a former Director of Defence Information, has died while being held by bandits following his abduction in Katsina State.

According to the Katsina State Government, the retired military officer was kidnapped alongside his wife around the Matazu area approximately two weeks ago. Reports indicate the couple was travelling to attend a wedding when they were ambushed and taken captive by armed bandits.

Confirming the development, the Katsina State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasiru Mu'azu, said the retired general died while in captivity despite efforts by the government and security agencies to secure his release.

In an official statement, the commissioner said the deceased died a natural death resulting from complications associated with diabetes and hypertension.

"The Katsina State Government, with a heavy heart and deep sense of loss, wishes to inform the general public of the tragic passing of Retired Major General Rabe Abubakar," the statement read.

The government described the incident as a significant loss to Katsina State and Nigeria, noting the late officer's contributions to national service.

Governor Dikko Umaru Radda extended condolences to the family of the deceased and described the incident as a dark moment that highlights the continuing security challenges posed by banditry and criminal activities in parts of northern Nigeria.

The state government reiterated its commitment to working with federal authorities and security agencies to combat banditry and bring those responsible for the abduction to justice.

The death of the retired general adds to growing concerns about insecurity, kidnappings, and the vulnerability of travellers in affected communities across the region.
