Chief Denen Tofi is remembered by many in Benue as one of the prominent businessmen and industrialists of his generation — a man whose journey from humble beginnings to substantial business interests has continued to inspire stories about enterprise, perseverance and faith.
Born in the 1900s in Mbagen, in present-day Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State, Tofi was the son of Tofi Anyia and Ngurunga Agbo Tofi. His mother was reportedly a daughter of Gber Dogo of Konshisha Local Government Area, although she grew up in Kunav, Vandeikya.
Unlike many people who later became prominent in business, Tofi did not have formal schooling. His early life was reportedly marked by subsistence farming and petty trading.
As a young trader, he was said to have travelled long distances to purchase goods from markets in present-day Cross River State, including Obudu and Ikom areas. Among the items he traded were locally made soap, wrappers, beads and other household products. He would then trek to Tiv communities, including Ihugh, to sell them.
His determination to improve his circumstances eventually took him away from Mbagen. In the early 1940s, according to accounts of his life, he moved to Ugba in present-day Logo Local Government Area, where he established himself as a commercial farmer.
Farming became the foundation of his growing business activities. With proceeds from agriculture, he reportedly ventured further into trading, purchasing fabrics — including Manchester wax — from Onitsha for resale.
He later expanded into the bulk purchase of agricultural produce during harvest seasons, supplying traders who transported goods to different parts of Nigeria.
It was through this gradual expansion from farming and petty trading into large-scale commerce that Tofi became associated with significant business interests in Benue.
Accounts of his business career link him to the Denen Tofi Group of Companies, as well as hotel and educational ventures including Paradise Hotel in Gboko and Makurdi, New State Hotel and Tofi Memorial Grammar School. He was also associated with National Oil and other businesses.
Beyond business, Tofi became known for his large family. Historical accounts state that he married several wives and had many children. He was also conferred with the traditional title “Ijor Gbior I Tiv.”
Perhaps the phrase most associated with his business philosophy was: “Do well, God will help you.”
The statement reflected what admirers regarded as his belief in hard work, good conduct and faith as foundations for success.
Chief Denen Tofi reportedly died in October 2021 at the age of 103 at Nyom Hospital, Gboko, after he became unwell during the night. His death was confirmed at the time by his son, Aondoakura Tofi.
Today, memories of Chief Denen Tofi remain part of the oral and business history of Tivland. His story is particularly notable because it traces a remarkable transition — from a young man with no formal education, surviving through farming and petty trade, to a businessman associated with hotels, education, commerce and other enterprises.
His life also raises a broader lesson about the history of indigenous enterprise in Benue: many successful businesspeople built their fortunes gradually, beginning with agriculture, local commerce and long-distance trading before expanding into larger ventures.
For younger generations, the story of Chief Denen Tofi is therefore more than a tale of wealth. It is a story of beginnings, persistence, enterprise and the willingness to start small.
“Do well, God will help you.”
Chief Denen Tofi’s legacy, as remembered by those who tell his story, continues to live on.
May his soul rest in peace.
