The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has rescued a 36-year-old woman identified as Grace Aniekuoku, who was allegedly chained and confined in a room by her elder brother, Chinedu Aniekuoko, for over one year and four months.
Speaking to journalists, the Commissioner of Police for the FCT, Ahmed Sanusi, said the command received a distress call on May 12 concerning the woman's condition.
According to the police commissioner, a team of detectives from the Katampe Division was immediately deployed to investigate the report.
Police said that upon arriving at the residence, the suspect allegedly resisted officers and refused them access to the area where the victim was being held. Officers subsequently gained entry and discovered the woman chained inside a room.
Authorities stated that the victim appeared severely emaciated and was found in poor sanitary conditions.
The suspect was arrested at the scene, while the victim was rescued and transported to a medical facility, where she is currently receiving treatment.
Preliminary investigations by the police reportedly revealed that the victim's son had been taken to an unknown location approximately two years ago. Investigators allege that the woman was subsequently confined to prevent her from questioning the whereabouts of her child.
Police say efforts are ongoing to locate and rescue the missing child.
The suspect remains in police custody and is expected to be charged in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The incident has raised concerns about domestic abuse, unlawful confinement, mental health support, family accountability, and the protection of vulnerable persons within communities.
