Five youths were reportedly killed on Tuesday after gunmen attacked a mining site in Gero Village, Gyel District of Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State. Community members said the victims were engaged in mining activities when the attackers opened fire. The incident has heightened concerns over deteriorating security in communities surrounding Kuru and Jos South.
Five youths have been reported killed following an attack by armed gunmen at a mining site in Gero Village, Gyel District of Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State.
According to residents, the attack occurred at about 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday while the victims were carrying out mining activities in the area.
A resident of the community, identified as Ritiji Dalyop, told journalists that the attackers stormed the site and shot the victims, killing them on the spot.
The incident comes shortly after another reported security breach at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, located approximately five kilometres from Gero Village. Reports indicate that three security operatives lost their lives during the Monday night attack.
Confirming the latest incident, the National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM), Rwang Tengwong, described the killings as part of growing security threats affecting communities around the area.
Tengwong expressed concern over the safety of residents and participants at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, urging security agencies to act swiftly to prevent further attacks.
He also called on government authorities to strengthen surveillance measures and enhance the protection of lives and property in vulnerable communities.
As of the time of filing this report, there was no official statement from security agencies regarding the attack, and details surrounding the identity and motive of the attackers remain unclear.
