The disaster destroyed homes, farmlands, schools, churches, roads and other infrastructure, leaving many families in urgent need of assistance.
Residents of Odoba Ogaje community in Otukpa, Ogbadibo Local Government Area of Benue State, are counting their losses after a devastating flood triggered by heavy rainfall caused widespread destruction across the area.
The flood, which occurred following a downpour on the night of June 21, affected several parts of the community, forcing many residents to flee their homes as floodwaters inundated residential areas and damaged critical infrastructure.
Community members said the situation was worsened by drainage challenges associated with the ongoing dualization of the Makurdi–Enugu Expressway passing through the area. According to residents, existing drainage channels were unable to accommodate the volume of water, resulting in severe flooding across affected neighborhoods.
Witnesses described scenes of destruction as floodwaters swept through homes, washed away valuable property and disrupted economic activities. Farmlands, schools, churches, roads and residential buildings were among the assets reportedly affected.
The disaster has further increased hardship for many households, particularly those who lost shelter, household belongings, crops and other sources of livelihood.
Calls for Emergency Assistance
Affected residents have appealed to the Federal Government, Benue State Government and emergency management agencies to provide urgent relief and rehabilitation support.
The community is seeking emergency food supplies, temporary shelter, medical assistance, relief materials and support for displaced families.
Residents also urged relevant authorities to visit the area to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the damage and coordinate immediate response efforts.
Among those called upon to intervene are the Chairman of Ogbadibo Local Government Council, the member representing Ogbadibo State Constituency in the Benue State House of Assembly, the member representing Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, the Senator representing Benue South Senatorial District, the Governor of Benue State, the Federal Ministry of Environment, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).
Growing Concerns Over Flood Management
The incident has renewed concerns about flood preparedness, drainage infrastructure and environmental safeguards around major road construction projects.
Environmental experts have repeatedly warned that inadequate drainage systems, blocked water channels and poor stormwater management can significantly increase flood risks during periods of intense rainfall.
Residents are calling not only for immediate humanitarian assistance but also for sustainable flood mitigation measures that can reduce the likelihood of similar disasters in the future.
As of the time of filing this report, no official estimate had been released regarding the total number of displaced persons or the financial value of damaged properties.
