Governor Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia on Monday signed into law the Benue State Electricity Law, 2026, marking a significant development in the state's power sector reform efforts.
The signing ceremony took place at the Old Banquet Hall of the Government House in Makurdi.
According to the state government, the new law establishes a legal framework intended to facilitate increased electricity generation, transmission, and distribution within Benue State. Officials say the legislation aligns with broader efforts to improve access to electricity and encourage private sector participation in power development.
The government stated that improved electricity supply could support economic activities across various sectors by attracting investment, encouraging industrial development, and creating employment opportunities, particularly for young people.
Officials further noted that businesses could benefit from reduced dependence on generators and alternative energy sources, potentially lowering operating costs and improving productivity.
The legislation also contains provisions aimed at strengthening consumer protection through improved complaint resolution mechanisms, service accountability, and fair billing practices.
In addition, the government says the law could accelerate rural electrification efforts by providing a framework for expanding electricity infrastructure to underserved communities. Improved electricity access may support healthcare delivery, education services, agricultural processing, and community security.
While government officials have outlined several anticipated benefits, the actual impact of the law will depend on implementation, regulatory structures, investment levels, infrastructure development, and the participation of relevant stakeholders within the electricity sector.
Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Sir Tersoo Kula, announced the development in a statement issued on Monday.
