Governor Hyacinth Alia has pledged that those responsible for the deadly attack on Efeyi community in Ugboju District of Otukpo Local Government Area will be brought to justice, declaring that the perpetrators "will pay" for the killing of innocent residents.

The governor made the pledge on Tuesday while reacting to the early morning attack, which authorities say was carried out by suspected armed herders. Reports indicate that several people were killed and others sustained injuries, although officials have not released an independently verified casualty figure.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Tersoo Kula, Governor Alia expressed condolences to the affected families and reaffirmed his administration's commitment to strengthening security across Benue State.

"The bandits must pay for their crime against the peaceful people of Benue State," the governor said.
Governor Alia commended the Benue State Police Command for its rapid deployment to the affected community.

According to the government, police operatives pursued the fleeing attackers after receiving reports of the incident. During the operation, security personnel engaged some of the suspects in a gun battle, resulting in the death of two individuals alleged to have remained behind to cover the escape of others.

The governor praised the Commissioner of Police, Cletus Nwadiogbu, and officers of the command for what he described as their professionalism and prompt response.

He reiterated that his administration would continue to provide logistical and operational support to security agencies in efforts to tackle violent crime across the state.

"Benue land is for Benue people. Those who think they can come and push the people away and take over should think twice.

"Our people are peaceful and hardworking. I was elected to protect them, and I must do everything legitimately possible to ensure my people are protected and our land is secured," the governor stated.

The attack on Efeyi is the latest in a series of violent incidents affecting communities in Benue State, particularly in the southern part of the state. Security agencies say operations are continuing to locate and apprehend other suspects believed to have fled the scene.

Benue State has experienced recurring attacks in several rural communities, with residents, government officials and security agencies raising concerns over persistent insecurity. Authorities continue to implement security operations while community leaders have repeatedly called for stronger protection of vulnerable settlements.
