Suspected gunmen on Monday night attacked the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, near Jos in Plateau State, killing two soldiers and a police officer. Security operatives successfully repelled the attackers and prevented them from accessing residential quarters housing participants of ongoing courses at the institute.

Suspected gunmen launched an attack on the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, near Jos, late Monday night, resulting in the deaths of two soldiers and a police officer.

According to security sources, the attackers struck at about 11 p.m. and attempted to gain access to residential quarters within the institute where participants of ongoing strategic and policy courses were accommodated.

However, security personnel stationed at the facility reportedly engaged the assailants in a gun battle, preventing them from breaching the residential area.

Sources said the police officer killed during the incident was attached as an orderly to a retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police, while the two soldiers died during the exchange of gunfire with the attackers.

No participant was abducted, and the institute's residential facilities remained secure throughout the incident.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies confirmed that a security incident occurred in the vicinity of the institution during the early hours of the day.

The Head of Public Affairs, Dr. Osime Samuel, stated that the situation was swiftly contained through the intervention of security personnel and relevant agencies.

He assured participants, staff, residents, and stakeholders that there was no threat to the safety of individuals or facilities within the institute and that academic and administrative activities were continuing as scheduled.

The institute further disclosed that investigations were ongoing and urged members of the public to rely only on official communications regarding the incident.

Security agencies have reportedly intensified surveillance in the area and launched efforts to track down those responsible for the attack.
