Residents of Ikobi in Apa Local Government Area of Benue State are mourning the death of a health worker, Ojoma Emie, who was reportedly killed in a suspected herdsmen attack on Monday morning.
According to community sources, Emie was travelling from Ikobi to Ugbokpo to purchase medicine when he was allegedly ambushed by armed attackers near Ugbobi Junction.
Residents later discovered his body after reports of gunfire in the area.
Confirming the incident to Benue Info-pedia, the Vice President of the Ikobi Progressive Forum, Dr. Edoh Ofugocho, said residents became alarmed after hearing multiple gunshots.
"Our people heard gunshots about 10 to 15 times. People immediately became apprehensive because they knew he was on his way to Ugbokpo to buy medicine. Later, it was discovered that he had been attacked and killed at Ugbobi Junction," Ofugocho said.
He described the deceased as a health worker, husband and father whose death has left the community devastated.
Ofugocho also expressed concern over what he described as recurring attacks along the route, alleging that residents have repeatedly called for stronger security measures.
"We are deeply worried that this particular route has become a recurring ambush point for suspected herdsmen. Our people can no longer travel freely on roads within their own communities," he said.
He further alleged that the attackers severed the victim's head before fleeing the scene.
Community members say the latest incident has heightened fears among residents, many of whom rely on the road for daily economic and social activities.
As of the time of filing this report, security agencies had not publicly commented on the incident, and no arrests had been announced.
