Tension gripped the George Akume Way junction linking Nyon and Terwase Agbadu in Makurdi on Wednesday morning as residents accused the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) of destroying homes, farms and killings within its perimeter, despite an existing court order. Locals say their farm produce has been scattered, children allegedly detained, and community members harassed, leaving them fearful for their safety.
The affected area lies close to a major NAF installation, whose lands reportedly extend to Tse Poor village. Residents have repeatedly voiced concerns over what they describe as intimidation and disruption of farming activities, which are vital to their livelihoods.
The Makurdi Local Government chairman, alongside security agencies, visited the scene of the protest to mediate. He appealed to residents to return home and scheduled a meeting at Ter-Makurdi House for dialogue tomorrow morning.
Though he offered financial support, villagers reportedly declined, emphasizing that their priority is access to farmland and an amicable resolution before the planting season begins.
“Our people are only asking for peace and the ability to farm. Money cannot replace our farms,” a community spokesperson said.
“The local government and security agencies have promised to help, but we want a lasting solution,” another resident added.
