Nasarawa State Government says a lithium mining company operating in Endo has committed ₦2.6 billion for development projects in communities affected by mining activities.
The Nasarawa State Government says it has secured a ₦2.6 billion commitment from a lithium mining company operating in Endo community, Nasarawa Local Government Area, for development projects in communities hosting mining operations.
Peter Ahemba, Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to Governor Abdullahi Sule, disclosed the development during a bi-monthly press conference in Lafia, the state capital.
According to Ahemba, the ₦2.6 billion forms part of an agreement reached with the mining company to support communities affected by its operations.
He said the amount is separate from more than $1.5 million previously released to the state as a signature bonus.
How will the ₦2.6bn be spent?
Ahemba said Governor Sule had convened an expanded State Executive Council meeting involving traditional rulers and representatives of host communities to determine how the funds would be utilised.
The governor, according to the government spokesperson, directed the benefiting communities to identify priority projects that would have a direct impact on residents and submit their proposals to the state government.
This means the eventual use of the ₦2.6 billion is expected to be determined through a process involving the affected communities and state authorities.
However, details on the specific projects, implementation timetable, disbursement arrangements and monitoring mechanism were not provided in the information available for this report.
What about the earlier $1.5m signature bonus?
Ahemba also said the earlier $1.5 million-plus signature bonus had already been invested in development programmes intended to improve living conditions at the grassroots.
The government did not, in the information provided, give a detailed breakdown of those programmes or the amount allocated to each project.
Such details would be important for independently assessing how the earlier funds were utilised and what measurable outcomes resulted from the investment.
Why it matters
Mining can bring economic opportunities to host communities, but it can also place pressure on land, infrastructure and local livelihoods.
The new ₦2.6 billion commitment therefore raises an important public-interest question: which projects will ultimately be funded, where will they be located, and how will residents be able to track implementation?
For communities hosting mining operations, transparency around the funds and projects could be as important as the size of the financial commitment itself.
What happens next?
The immediate next step, according to the state government, is for benefiting communities to identify and submit priority projects.
Benue Info-pedia will be interested in tracking the process from announcement to implementation — including the projects selected, their locations, budgets, contractors, timelines and eventual delivery.
