The Chairman of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Fiidi Council Ward in Makurdi Local Government Area of Benue State, Igbu Job Terhemen, has reportedly been killed by unknown assailants.
Terhemen was allegedly attacked in the early hours of Wednesday after he left his residence in Makurdi on Tuesday evening to watch a local football match in the Kanshio area.
According to a friend of the deceased who spoke to journalists in Makurdi on condition of anonymity, Terhemen did not return home after leaving for the match, prompting people around him to begin searching for him.
He was reportedly found around 2am in a bush close to his residence near the NNPC depot along the Makurdi-Otukpo Road.
The source said Terhemen was discovered in an almost unconscious state and appeared unable to speak or communicate.
“Unfortunately, he died before he could get medical attention,” the source said.
The circumstances surrounding the attack remain unclear.
The friend alleged that Terhemen had been tied with ropes and appeared to have suffered a needle-like injury, raising suspicion that he may have been injected with an unknown substance before being abandoned.
However, these claims have not been independently verified by Benue Info-pedia, and the nature of the injury or substance, if any, remains unknown.
The source also said Terhemen’s mobile phone was found on him and had apparently not been taken by the attackers.
Following the incident, NDC State Chairman Ohini Ojegbe described the killing as a “broad-daylight evil” and called on security agencies to urgently investigate.
Ojegbe urged the authorities to identify and arrest those responsible and ensure that they face justice.
In a separate statement signed by the party’s State Publicity Secretary, Agile Bem, the NDC described Terhemen as a committed member whose contributions to the party would be missed.
The party extended its condolences to Terhemen’s family, the Fiidi community and members of the NDC, while praying for strength for those affected by his death.
However, the police have not confirmed the incident.
The Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Peter Aondongu, said the command was yet to receive a report concerning the alleged killing when contacted.
The lack of an official police report means several details surrounding Terhemen’s death remain unconfirmed, including the identity and motive of the attackers and the circumstances that led to his death.
Benue Info-pedia understands that further investigation and an official account from security authorities will be necessary to establish what happened.
The incident has nevertheless raised fresh concerns about security in parts of Makurdi, particularly as residents await clarification from the authorities on the circumstances surrounding the death.
