Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has announced his withdrawal from the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primaries in the state. The governor said the move followed consultations and was made in the interest of peace, unity and stability in Rivers State.
He also pledged support for whoever emerges as the party’s candidate.

Fubara disclosed the decision in a statement dated May 20, 2026, addressed to the people of Rivers State, stating that the move followed “deep reflection and extensive consultations” with family members, friends and associates.
According to the governor, leadership sometimes requires sacrifice, adding that the collective interest of Rivers State should take priority over individual political ambitions.
He stated that peace, stability and unity in the state informed his decision to step aside from the process.
“Rivers State is bigger than any individual, and at this critical moment, the peace, stability and unity of our dear state must take precedence over every personal interest,” he said.
Fubara expressed appreciation to his supporters, acknowledging their commitment and sacrifices throughout the political process.
He also referred to facing “immense pressures and difficult choices,” although no specific details were provided in the statement.
The governor thanked the APC leadership for the platform extended to him and appreciated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as support and encouragement.
He further maintained that his withdrawal should not be interpreted as weakness or surrender.
“I stepped aside… not out of weakness, fear, or surrender, but out of conviction and sacrifice so that Rivers State may move forward in peace and unity,” the statement read.
Fubara added that he remains committed to serving the people of Rivers State until the end of his tenure.
As of the time of filing this report, independent confirmation from official APC structures or additional government channels regarding the announcement had not been issued.
