The police have arrested Tajudeen Baruwa following an attempted takeover of the National Secretariat of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Abuja, intensifying the ongoing leadership crisis within the union.
Baruwa, who leads a faction of the union, reportedly mobilised his supporters to enforce a recent court ruling that directed the removal of Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, as president of the union.
The development comes after the National Industrial Court, in a judgment delivered on March 12, ordered MC Oluomo to vacate office and recognised Baruwa as the rightful leader of the union.
Sources said Baruwa and his supporters arrived at the secretariat to assume control in line with the ruling. However, security operatives swiftly intervened, preventing the takeover and subsequently arresting him.
Tension reportedly rose around the secretariat as rival factions gathered, raising concerns over possible clashes.
Details of the incident remain sketchy as of press time, but tensions are high at the secretariat located in Abuja.
Efforts to reach spokespersons for the police and the NURTW factions were unsuccessful as of filing this report.
The NURTW has in recent times been embroiled in internal disputes over leadership, with the latest development further deepening uncertainty within the influential transport union.
