At least 18 people have been killed in a renewed communal clash linked to a longstanding land dispute in Rafi Local Government Area of Niger State. According to the Niger State Police Command, 15 victims were burnt to death after assailants set a two-bedroom apartment ablaze, while three others were killed in related attacks.

No fewer than 18 people have been confirmed dead following renewed communal violence in Rafi Local Government Area of Niger State.

According to the Niger State Police Command, the latest attack occurred on Tuesday night at Angwan-Baago near Godoro village, where 15 people were reportedly trapped inside a two-bedroom apartment that was set on fire by attackers.

Police also confirmed that another person was killed at a separate location, bringing the total number of fatalities recorded in the crisis to 18.
The violence is linked to a protracted land dispute between two communities in the area.

The police said the crisis began on June 29 after suspected armed men allegedly shot and killed 25-year-old Ibrahim Musa at Godoro village.

Authorities said the killing triggered a reprisal attack in which members of a local vigilante group, popularly known as Yansakai, allegedly blocked a road and killed 28-year-old Bashir Mazi.
Police spokesperson Abiodun Wasiu said investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attacks.

He added that a reconciliation committee led by local government officials is working with security agencies to de-escalate tensions, while joint police and military patrols have been deployed to restore peace in the affected communities.

A community source, who requested anonymity for security reasons, alleged that the conflict involved members of the Fulani and Kamuku communities. However, this aspect has not been independently verified by authorities.

The Chairman of Rafi Local Government Area, Ayuba Katako, confirmed that the crisis occurred but declined to give an official casualty figure. He said security agencies had been mobilised to restore order and identify those responsible for the violence.

Authorities say investigations remain ongoing.
