The Nigeria Police Force has moved to dismiss and prosecute officers linked to the fatal shooting of Mr. Mene Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State. The decision follows the conclusion of disciplinary proceedings ordered by the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu.

The Nigeria Police Force has announced the dismissal and planned prosecution of officers involved in the fatal shooting of Mr. Mene Ogidi, which occurred on April 26, 2026, in Effurun, Delta State.

According to a statement issued by Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, the action followed the conclusion of an expedited disciplinary review initiated by the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu. The officers connected to the incident were reportedly withdrawn from the Delta State Command and redeployed to Force Headquarters in Abuja for investigation.

The Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC), alongside other internal mechanisms, examined the circumstances surrounding the shooting and found that the principal officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, acted in violation of Force Order 237, which regulates the use of firearms by police personnel. The committee described the conduct as unlawful and unprofessional.

Based on these findings, the FDC recommended the immediate dismissal of ASP Usman and other officers found culpable. The Inspector-General has approved the recommendation and forwarded it to the Police Service Commission for ratification in line with due process.

The police further stated that, upon completion of administrative procedures, the affected officers will be handed over to appropriate judicial authorities for prosecution over their roles in the incident.

Reiterating the Force’s position, the statement emphasised a zero-tolerance policy for extrajudicial actions and abuse of power, noting that no officer is permitted to take life outside the provisions of the law.

The Inspector-General also extended condolences to the family of the deceased, assuring them that justice would be pursued and that the case would be handled in a manner that reinforces accountability.

The incident in Effurun has drawn attention to ongoing concerns about the use of force by law enforcement personnel in Nigeria, particularly under Force Order 237, which has remained central to discussions on police conduct and reform.
