President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Prof. Segun Aina, a 39-year-old professor of Computer Engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, as the new Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). The appointment was announced on Thursday in a statement by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, with Aina set to assume office after the tenure of the current Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, expires on July 31, 2026.
The Federal Government has named Prof. Segun Aina as the incoming Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), marking a leadership transition expected to take effect in 2026.
According to a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Bola Tinubu approved the appointment of the 39-year-old academic, who is currently a Professor of Computer Engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife.
Prof. Aina will succeed Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, whose tenure as JAMB Registrar is scheduled to end on July 31, 2026.
The presidency described Aina as a distinguished academic and systems expert with experience spanning digital infrastructure, examination systems, and public-sector reform. He is expected to bring technological depth to the administration of Nigeria’s tertiary admissions process.
His academic background includes a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Systems Engineering from the University of Kent, a Master’s in Internet Computing and Network Security, and a PhD in Digital Signal Processing from Loughborough University, United Kingdom. He also completed the Senior Management Programme at Lagos Business School.
The statement further noted that Aina began his early professional exposure with JAMB during his National Youth Service, where he gained experience in admissions processes and data-driven systems.
With over 15 years of post-graduation experience, he has worked across technology policy and institutional reform, advising government bodies on digital transformation and operational efficiency. He has also consulted for examination bodies including the National Examinations Council (NECO) and the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB), as well as several state education ministries.
He is a member of professional bodies such as the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).
The presidency stated that President Tinubu expects the incoming registrar to strengthen JAMB’s operational systems and build on reforms already implemented under the outgoing leadership.
If confirmed as planned, Prof. Aina will become one of the youngest individuals to lead the examination body in its history, reflecting a continued push toward digitalisation and systems-driven governance in Nigeria’s education sector.
