A suspected key figure linked to a network accused of orchestrating attacks in parts of Plateau State has been arrested in an intelligence-led operation, according to security sources familiar with the development.

The suspect, described by the sources as a Fulani community leader in his 50s and locally known as “Ardo,” was reportedly apprehended in the Mahanga area of Riyom Local Government Area.

The sources said the suspect is currently in custody while investigators examine physical and digital evidence allegedly linking him to a wider network suspected of involvement in attacks across Plateau State.

However, the specific identity of the suspect, the nature of the evidence against him and the charges, if any, have not been independently established by Benue Info-pedia. The suspect should therefore be presumed innocent unless proven guilty in accordance with the law.

Focus on Mahanga
Mahanga, historically identified as Rankum, has for years featured in accounts about the conflict in parts of Riyom and neighbouring Barkin Ladi. Previous reports have cited allegations by local residents and political representatives that the settlement became a base or staging point for armed groups.

In 2014, The Nation reported allegations of unusual movements and suspected arms build-up around Mahanga, although security authorities at the time disputed the claims and described them as speculation.

More recent reporting has also linked attacks in Riyom to the Rankum/Mahanga axis. In April 2026, Channels Television reported that an attack on Jol community was allegedly launched from the area, based on accounts from local sources.

The history of the area is contested, particularly over displacement, land ownership and the renaming of communities. Research and previous media reports have documented claims that Rankum was renamed Mahanga after violence and displacement in 2001.

Intelligence operation
According to the sources, the latest arrest followed intensified intelligence gathering involving surveillance and targeted operations by security agencies.

The sources attributed a significant role to the Department of State Services (DSS), including the use of intelligence, surveillance and recorded evidence to identify suspected members of the network.

The claim that the operation involved satellite tracking, CCTV surveillance and other enhanced capabilities could not independently be verified at the time of publication.

The reported arrest comes amid continuing violence in parts of Plateau State. Previous attacks have resulted in deaths, displacement and destruction of homes and livelihoods, while security agencies and community organisations have continued to accuse one another of failing to adequately address the crisis.

Claims of pressure over DSS leadership
The sources further alleged that individuals connected to the suspected network have been lobbying authorities in Abuja for the redeployment of Plateau State DSS Director Paul Damian and the state's Commissioner of Police.

They attributed the alleged pressure to recent security operations, including raids, arrests and efforts to disrupt suspected attack plans.

Claims that specific individuals travelled to Abuja on July 15, 2026, to seek Damian's removal, as well as allegations concerning particular arrests and financial networks, could not independently be verified by Benue Info-pedia.

Similarly, allegations that security personnel have faced retaliatory smear campaigns following operations require independent investigation. Any complaint of misconduct by security personnel should be investigated through appropriate channels, just as allegations against suspected attackers should be subjected to due process.

What happens next?
The reported arrest could provide investigators with an opportunity to establish the structure, financing, logistics and membership of any network connected to the attacks — if the evidence withstands independent scrutiny.

Authorities will also need to provide greater clarity on the suspect's identity, alleged offences, evidence recovered during the operation and whether other arrests or prosecutions will follow.

For residents in affected communities, the immediate priority remains protection of lives and property.
Security agencies have continued to urge residents to remain vigilant and provide credible information about suspicious movements or planned attacks.

Benue Info-pedia will continue to monitor the development and update this report as official confirmation, court records or independently verifiable evidence becomes available.
