Three police officers have been killed following the explosion of an improvised explosive device (IED) along the Anka–Bagega road in Anka Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
The officers were part of a security team conducting a clearance operation on June 15 when their armoured personnel carrier reportedly triggered the explosive device, resulting in a fatal blast.

According to security sources, the incident occurred at approximately 5:05 p.m. on June 15 along the Anka–Bagega road, an area that has experienced recurring security challenges linked to armed bandit activity.
The operation was led by the Officer-in-Charge of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit, Superintendent of Police Abdulrazak Musa Hassan. He reportedly led a team tasked with locating and neutralizing a suspected explosive device believed to have been planted by armed bandits operating in the area.
Personnel from the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) joined the operation, which involved the deployment of an armoured personnel carrier to facilitate the clearance exercise.
During the operation, the vehicle reportedly triggered the explosive device, causing a powerful blast that killed three officers instantly.
The deceased officers were identified as SP Abdulrazak Musa Hassan, Inspector Murtala Musa of the VCRU, and Inspector Auwal Ahmad of the EOD unit.
Authorities said the bodies of the officers were evacuated to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Gusau, where post-mortem examinations are expected to be conducted.
The remains have been deposited at the hospital morgue pending further procedures.
Security authorities have reinforced operations in the area while investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the explosion. Efforts are also ongoing to clear the affected route and prevent additional attacks.
The incident highlights the persistent security threats facing personnel operating in parts of Zamfara State, where armed banditry and related violence have remained major concerns for residents and security agencies.
