President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has stepped into the ongoing political standoff in Benue State, directing George Akume and Governor Hyacinth Alia to resolve their differences without delay.
A crucial reconciliation meeting is now scheduled to hold today, May 3, following a rescheduling from the earlier April 30 date.

Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has ordered an immediate resolution of the lingering political rift between George Akume and Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia, escalating federal intervention in what has become a defining power struggle within the state’s ruling party structure.

The directive, according to sources familiar with the development, prompted a rescheduling of a previously planned meeting. The high-level engagement, initially set for April 30, is now expected to take place today, May 3, in Benue State.

While official details of the agenda remain undisclosed, insiders describe the meeting as a decisive effort to restore cohesion within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state ahead of the 2027 political cycle.

Early indications, though not independently verified, suggest a possible political compromise may be on the table. Sources hint at a scenario where Governor Alia could secure support for a second-term bid, while Akume may retain significant influence over the nomination of National Assembly candidates.

The Akume–Alia rift has, in recent months, deepened factional divisions within the Benue APC, raising concerns among party stakeholders about its potential impact on electoral stability and governance in the state.

Presidential intervention at this stage underscores the strategic importance of Benue in the broader national political equation and signals an urgency to prevent further fragmentation within the ruling party.
