Two community volunteers were reportedly killed and three others injured after gunmen attacked a civilian guard post in Angwan Tsarki, Mangor, Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, late Sunday night.
The attack reportedly occurred at about 10 p.m. while members of the community were carrying out night-watch duties in the area, according to a survivor who was among those injured.
The survivor said the attackers opened fire on the community members at the guard post before fleeing the area.
The three injured victims were subsequently taken to a local hospital for medical treatment, according to accounts from residents. Videos from the medical facility reviewed by Benue Info-pedia showed distressed residents gathered outside the hospital while injured survivors received treatment.
The identities and motives of the attackers had not been independently established as of the time of reporting.
Some residents alleged that the attackers were Fulani. However, the allegation could not be independently verified, and there was no immediate confirmation from security authorities identifying those responsible for the attack.
The reported incident has renewed concerns about the security of rural communities in Bokkos and other parts of Plateau State, where communal and armed attacks have previously raised fears over the safety of residents, particularly those living in farming settlements.
Community volunteers and civilian guards often play a role in providing night security in areas where residents remain concerned about attacks. However, their involvement can also expose them to significant risks, particularly where formal security presence is limited.
The circumstances surrounding the attack, including the identities of those killed and injured, the number of attackers involved and whether any arrests have been made, remained unclear at the time of publication.
Benue Info-pedia could not independently verify the full circumstances of the incident beyond the accounts and visual material available.
Further confirmation from the Plateau State Police Command, other security agencies or local government authorities would be necessary to establish the identities of the attackers and provide an official account of the incident.
The latest attack underscores the continuing security concerns facing vulnerable communities in Plateau State and the need for timely intervention to protect residents and prevent further violence.
