A political stakeholders’ meeting in Zaki-Biam, Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State, was reportedly disrupted by suspected thugs on Friday. The organiser alleged that the attackers were loyal to the Executive Chairman of Ukum LGA, Jonathan Modi. A complaint has been filed with the police as investigations are expected to begin.
A stakeholders’ engagement held in Zaki-Biam, Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State, reportedly turned violent following an alleged attack by suspected political thugs.
The organiser of the meeting alleged that the incident occurred while he was seated with stakeholders, supporters, and respected community leaders, including the immediate past Commissioner, Abo Matthew. He further alleged that the attackers were led by the Director of Market Operations, Atumba Ninga, and were acting in support of the Executive Chairman of Ukum LGA, Jonathan Modi.
According to the statement, chairs and bottles were destroyed during the disruption, while mobile phones and other valuables belonging to attendees were allegedly taken away. The organiser said he restrained his supporters from retaliating in order to prevent further escalation of violence.
He described the incident as an attempt to return Ukum to “old politics of violence, intimidation, and lawlessness,” stressing the need for peace and issue-based political engagement in the area.
A formal complaint has been lodged with the Divisional Police Officer in Ukum, with the organiser expressing confidence that security agencies will carry out a thorough investigation and ensure justice.
As of press time, there has been no official response from the Ukum Local Government Council or the individuals mentioned in the allegation. Police authorities are expected to provide updates as investigations proceed.
