The Chairman of Okpokwu Local Government Area, Hon. Adah Mathew Inalegwu, has called for peaceful coexistence among residents and Fulani communities in the area, emphasizing dialogue and cooperation as essential tools for maintaining peace and preventing conflict.
The chairman made the call during a peace meeting held on June 16, 2026, in Ugbokolo, where Fulani leaders, security agencies, traditional rulers and community stakeholders gathered to discuss strategies for sustaining harmony across the local government.
The engagement comes amid continuing concerns about security and community relations in parts of Benue South, where tensions between farming communities and herders have historically posed challenges to peace and development.
Addressing participants, Inalegwu stressed the importance of mutual understanding and collective responsibility in preserving stability.
“We must live together in peace. Dialogue, mutual respect and cooperation remain the best path to resolving our differences and preventing conflict,” he said.
The chairman assured residents that his administration remains committed to protecting lives and property while working closely with security agencies to address potential threats to peace.
According to him, sustainable development can only thrive in an atmosphere of security and unity, adding that every group within the local government has a role to play in building a peaceful and prosperous society.
The meeting attracted key stakeholders including the Divisional Police Officer, Supol Okoriko Gabriel; representatives of the Department of State Services (DSS); the Nigerian Army Commander in Okpokwu; the District Head of Edumoga, Chief Ojoh Emmanuel Ochechema; the Ugbokolo Ward Head, Chief Emmanuel Ikom; Councillor representing Ugbokolo Ward, Hon. Clement Elachi; Hon. Ken Oche; and other community leaders.
Speaking on behalf of the Fulani community, the Head of the Fulani Community in Benue State, Alhaji Mohammad Adoriske, pledged continued cooperation with host communities and security agencies.
He stated that there had been no major conflict between Fulani residents and the people of Aokpe, attributing the situation to collaboration among community leaders, security personnel and local stakeholders.
Adoriske also commended the council chairman for promoting inclusiveness and supporting efforts aimed at safeguarding lives and property across the local government area.
The peace dialogue forms part of broader efforts by local authorities, traditional institutions and security agencies to address potential sources of tension through engagement, consultation and preventive measures rather than confrontation.
