A Nigerian academic from Benue State, Prof Enoch Terlumun Iortyom, has been appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the Magburaka Campus of Ernest Bai Koroma University of Science and Technology in Sierra Leone.
The appointment places the seasoned geographer in one of the key leadership positions of the university, where he is expected to contribute to academic development, policy implementation, and institutional growth.
Prof Iortyom holds a PhD in Geography from the University of Fort Hare, South Africa, as well as a Master’s and Bachelor’s degree in Geography from Benue State University, Makurdi. Over the years, he has built a strong academic reputation through teaching, research, and university administration across Africa.
The Benue-born professor is a member of several international academic bodies, including the Royal Geographical Society, the Canadian Association of Geographers, the European Association of Geographers, and the Association of American Geographers.
He has also served as an external examiner for numerous universities, including the University of Fort Hare, University of the Witwatersrand, University of South Africa, Njala University, and the University of Makeni.
Within university administration, Prof Iortyom has chaired several committees such as the Curriculum Review Committee, Committee of Deans, and Affiliation Committee, while also serving on strategic bodies including the Appointments and Promotions Committee and the Finance and General Purpose Committee.
Beyond academia, he has contributed to higher education development across the region. He served on the committee set up by the Benue State Government to plan the establishment of specialized universities and has worked with the Tertiary Education Commission in Sierra Leone on academic standards.
The appointment is widely viewed as a recognition of his international academic experience and administrative leadership in higher education.
