The Benue State Government is reportedly set to recruit 12,000 teachers into public secondary schools, in a major expansion of the state’s teaching workforce under Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia.

The proposed exercise is expected to be handled by the Benue State Teaching Service Board (TSB), which is responsible for the administration, recruitment, posting and professional management of teachers in the state’s public secondary schools.

The planned recruitment would come as the administration seeks to address manpower shortages in the education sector and strengthen the capacity of public schools to provide teaching and learning services.

Governor Alia had previously spoken about the need for additional recruitment in the education sector. In August, the governor was reported to have said that, following the recruitment of about 9,700 primary school teachers, his administration was planning to employ more teachers for both primary and secondary schools to address manpower needs.

The proposed secondary-school recruitment would therefore represent another significant expansion of the state’s public education workforce if formally confirmed and implemented.

The TSB's mandate includes recruiting and deploying qualified teachers to areas of need, as well as training, supervision, promotion and professional development. The Board says applicants for teaching positions are required to meet approved professional and academic qualifications, including an NCE, relevant education degree or other recognised teaching qualifications, depending on the position.

Additional teachers could help schools facing staffing pressures, particularly where existing personnel are responsible for large numbers of students or multiple subjects.
However, recruitment alone would not resolve all the challenges facing public secondary education. Teacher deployment, professional development, classroom facilities, instructional materials and effective monitoring would also influence the eventual impact of the exercise.

Applicants urged to rely on official notice

Prospective applicants are being advised to prepare their academic credentials, identification documents and other relevant certificates ahead of any formal application process.
However, as of Saturday, September 19, the TSB's online job-opportunities page states that no job listings are currently available.

This is important because Benue has previously experienced the circulation of unverified teacher-recruitment notices online. In February 2026, Africa Check reported that the TSB had denied an earlier claim that its recruitment portal had opened and advised members of the public to disregard the message.

Applicants should therefore wait for the official recruitment notice, including the confirmed application portal, eligibility requirements, deadline and selection procedure, before submitting personal information or making any payment.

If the proposed 12,000-position recruitment is formally announced, it would create one of the state's largest recent opportunities for qualified teachers seeking employment in the public secondary-school system.

Benue Info-pedia will continue to monitor official announcements from the state government and Teaching Service Board and provide updates when the recruitment guidelines and application portal are formally released.
