Bishop Murray Medical Centre, Makurdi, has taken delivery of Lenacapavir, a long-acting injectable drug for HIV prevention. The hospital says it is awaiting directives from the Federal Government before administering the medication. Management described the development as a step forward in HIV prevention efforts in Benue State.
Bishop Murray Medical Centre in Makurdi, Benue State, has received a consignment of Lenacapavir, an injectable medication used for HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen prevention strategies.
The development was confirmed in a statement issued on April 28, 2026, by Udam Samuel Aseer Nts on behalf of the hospital’s management.
Lenacapavir is a long-acting PrEP option administered once every six months and is designed for individuals who are HIV-negative but at substantial risk of infection. It provides an alternative to the daily oral PrEP regimen currently in use.
Speaking on the development, the Health Coordinator of the facility, Rev. Fr. Peter Paleve, expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for the intervention, noting that the medication could improve adherence among patients.
“We are grateful to the Federal Government for this intervention. For many of our clients who struggle with daily medication, this long-acting option is a relief and will encourage more people to stay protected,” he said.
However, the hospital clarified that it has been directed by relevant authorities to delay administration of the drug pending further instructions. Paleve stated that the centre would strictly comply with guidelines from the Federal Ministry of Health and the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA).
“We have received the drugs, but we will not begin usage until we are officially authorized. We urge members of the public who may be eligible to remain patient while we await the go-ahead,” he added.
Lenacapavir is intended strictly for preventive use and does not treat HIV. Health experts say long-acting PrEP options could help address challenges associated with adherence to daily medication, particularly in high-burden areas.
Bishop Murray Medical Centre, a faith-based hospital under the Catholic Diocese of Makurdi, is a key provider of HIV testing, counselling, and prevention services in Benue State. The facility said it plans to commence public sensitisation and enrollment once federal approval for rollout is granted.
