The Federal Government has issued a fresh flood alert, warning that at least 10 states across Nigeria may experience heavy rainfall capable of triggering flooding between April 8 and April 12, 2026.
The warning was contained in a flood prediction notice released by the National Flood Early Warning Centre under the Federal Ministry of Environment. The notice, dated April 8, 2026, was signed by the Director of the Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department, Usman Bokani.
According to the ministry, states likely to be affected include Ebonyi, Anambra, Ogun, Taraba, Cross River, Benue, Imo, Delta, Rivers, and Abia.
In Ebonyi State, Afikpo and Nkalagu were identified as high-risk areas. Anambra communities listed include Atani, Iyowa Odekpe, Odekpe, and Onitsha, while Ayetoro and Ilaro in Ogun State may also be impacted.
Taraba State has several vulnerable locations such as Donga, Lau, Serti, Takum, and Yorro. In Cross River, Edor, Ikom, and Itigidi were highlighted.
Other areas include Igumale in Benue; Okigwe and Owerri in Imo; Oko Anara in Delta; Port Harcourt in Rivers; and Umuahia in Abia.
“The listed locations and their environs are likely to witness heavy rainfall that may lead to flooding within the period of prediction,” the ministry stated.
Residents in the affected areas have been advised to remain alert and take necessary precautions.
