The management of Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo has released a detailed account of achievements recorded within one year of the current administration led by Professor Francis Aba Uba.
In a commemorative statement issued by the institution’s Information and Public Relations Unit on May 13, 2026, the university described the past year as a period of “institutional rebirth,” citing reforms in academics, infrastructure, accreditation processes, staff welfare, and student enrollment.
The management of Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo says the institution has witnessed unprecedented transformation since the inauguration of the current leadership team on May 13, 2025.
According to the statement, the administration headed by Professor Francis Aba Uba inherited a university facing severe operational and academic challenges, including low student population, stalled academic programmes, unpaid staff entitlements, abandoned projects, and accreditation setbacks.
The university noted that before the current administration assumed office, the institution had fewer than 700 students after four years of operation, a situation it said exposed the school to possible sanctions and funding risks from the Federal Government and the Tertiary Education Trust Fund.
Management also stated that only nine academic programmes were active at the time, while several proposed programmes had failed resource verification processes with the National Universities Commission.
A major concern highlighted in the report was the delayed progress of pioneer MBBS students, who reportedly faced prolonged academic uncertainty due to the absence of accreditation processes from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria.
The administration claimed that within one year, six additional programmes received approval, including Pharmacy, Nursing Science, Medical Laboratory Science, Public Health, Physiology, and Anatomy.
The university said the total number of programmes has now increased from nine to sixteen, with additional programmes being prepared for submission to the National Universities Commission.
Management further disclosed that efforts to harmonize multiple academic calendars within the institution had been completed, allowing pioneer science students to graduate after prolonged delays.
On student enrollment, the statement said the institution’s population has risen beyond 2,000 students following reduced school fees and expanded academic offerings.
The administration also highlighted improvements in staff welfare, including payment of resettlement allowances, earned allowances to university unions, and implementation of a 13th-month salary package.
The report credited the Registrar, Michael Ogiji, with administrative restructuring and the establishment of service delivery reforms within the university system.
In terms of infrastructure, management listed several projects including the acquisition of facilities for student accommodation and medical training, construction of an autopsy centre, rehabilitation of hospital units, expansion of lecture halls, and progress on permanent site development.
The statement also disclosed that the institution had revived efforts toward securing accreditation for the MBBS programme through engagements with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria.
According to the report, pioneer medical students who were previously affected by delays have resumed lectures and practical sessions after new arrangements were put in place.
The university further revealed that 27 research proposals from the institution secured approval from TETFund within the last year.
Management described the anniversary as a reflection of “vision, sacrifice, and institutional renewal,” expressing optimism that the university would continue its expansion drive in the coming years.
The statement was signed by the Information, Public Relations and Protocol Unit of the institution.
