Governor Hyacinth Alia has inaugurated a 12-member Task Force to oversee preparations for the commencement of operations at the University of Agriculture, Science and Technology (UAST), Ihugh. The governor said the institution is designed to become a centre of excellence in agriculture, science, technology and entrepreneurship while contributing to Benue State's economic development.
Governor Hyacinth Alia has inaugurated a 12-member Task Force charged with facilitating the smooth take-off of the University of Agriculture, Science and Technology (UAST), Ihugh.
The inauguration took place on Wednesday at the Old Banquet Hall of Government House, Makurdi.
Speaking during the ceremony, the governor described the university as a strategic investment in the future of Benue State and an important platform for empowering young people through education, innovation, research and entrepreneurship.
According to him, the institution was conceived as a centre of excellence dedicated to agriculture, science, technology and enterprise development. He said the university would equip students with practical skills and entrepreneurial capabilities necessary for job creation and economic growth.
The governor noted that the establishment of the institution aligns with his administration's vision of building a knowledge-driven economy capable of leveraging technology and innovation for sustainable development.
He further stated that the university would strengthen Benue's position as Nigeria's food basket through research-driven agricultural innovation, value addition and the promotion of modern farming practices.
The newly inaugurated Task Force is headed by Professor Leonard Shirgba, while the Registrar of the university, Dr. Johnson Echor, will serve as secretary.
Governor Alia charged members of the committee to provide the strategic direction required for the successful establishment of the institution. He emphasized the need to develop the structures, policies, systems and resources necessary for effective commencement of academic and administrative activities.
"The university is more than a physical institution. It is a strategic investment in the future of Benue State and in the dreams of our young people," the governor said.
He added that the institution is expected to produce graduates equipped to establish businesses, create jobs and contribute meaningfully to economic growth.
Expressing confidence in the competence and integrity of the Task Force members, the governor urged them to approach their assignment with dedication, professionalism and patriotism.
He also expressed optimism that the university would emerge as a reference point for academic excellence, entrepreneurship, solution-oriented learning and research in Nigeria and across Africa.
The governor concluded by wishing members of the Task Force success and wisdom in carrying out their responsibilities.
