Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia has approved and commenced work on a Science and Technical College in Oju Local Government Area, in a move aimed at expanding access to vocational and science-based education in Benue State.
The project, located within the Oju/Obi Federal Constituency, follows recommendations by the Governor’s Special Adviser on Secondary Education, Chief Isaac Onwu. He had highlighted gaps in technical education across underserved areas of the state.
The new institution is designed to provide students with practical skills in science, technology, and technical trades. Officials say it will help address youth unemployment by equipping learners with employable competencies.
Construction work has already commenced, signalling the administration’s push for timely delivery. The college is expected to serve communities that currently lack access to technical education facilities.
The initiative aligns with the state government’s broader education reform agenda focused on improving quality and relevance in learning.
A government source noted that the project reflects “a deliberate effort to reposition education towards skills acquisition and innovation.”
When completed, the Oju Science and Technical College is projected to become a centre for skills development, supporting economic growth and youth empowerment in the constituency and beyond.
