A Benue State indigene, Mavis Nguevese, has achieved a First Class result at the Nigerian Law School, Kano campus. The Gwer East native overcame health and academic challenges to emerge among the top-performing graduates.

A law graduate from Benue State, Tyoor Nguevese Mavis, has secured a First Class result at the Nigerian Law School, Kano campus, marking a significant academic milestone.

Mavis, who hails from Mbaiase in Gwer East Local Government Area, was raised in Makurdi, the Benue State capital. She began her academic journey at Queen of the Rosary Secondary School, Gboko, where she distinguished herself as the Head Girl of the 2016 set and graduated as the best art student.

She later proceeded to Benue State University (BSU), where she studied Law and graduated with a Second Class Upper degree in 2024 before gaining admission into the Nigerian Law School.

Speaking on her success, Mavis attributed her performance to disciplined study habits, including reading ahead of lectures to enhance understanding and retention.

“I made it a habit to study topics before they were taught in class. It helped me assimilate faster and improved my recall during exams,” she said.

Despite her success, the journey was not without challenges. She disclosed that the rigorous nature of the programme led to physical and mental fatigue, compounded by health issues that required frequent visits to the school clinic.

Beyond academics, Mavis remained active in her faith as a devout Catholic and served as a Lay Reader during her time in Kano.

According to her, her motivation stemmed largely from her parents’ sacrifices and her desire to make a meaningful impact in society.

“I’ve always wanted to fight injustice and be a role model for young girls. Seeing how much my parents invested in my education kept me going,” she added.

She described her achievement as a result of hard work, dedication, and faith, noting that the sacrifices made during law school were ultimately worthwhile.

Mavis expressed interest in specialising in human rights law and advised aspiring students to remain focused and committed to their goals.
“Put God first and dedicate yourself to your studies. Hard work pays,” she advised.
