Academic activities at Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi (MOAUM), formerly Benue State University, have been suspended following an indefinite strike declared by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The industrial action, which reportedly commenced on June 1, 2026, was triggered by unresolved welfare issues affecting lecturers, leaving students uncertain about the continuation of the academic session.

Academic activities at Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi (MOAUM), have been brought to a halt following an indefinite strike action declared by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The industrial action, which reportedly began on June 1, 2026, has suspended lectures, examinations, and other academic activities across the institution.

According to information made available by the union, the strike was prompted by unresolved welfare concerns affecting academic staff. ASUU reportedly said the decision followed what it described as the university management’s failure to address long-standing welfare issues despite several meetings, discussions, and assurances.

The development has created uncertainty among students regarding the institution’s academic calendar and the completion of ongoing academic programmes.

While undergraduate students had reportedly completed their first-semester examinations before the strike commenced, postgraduate students were yet to begin their examinations at the time the industrial action took effect.

Students have appealed to Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, the university management, and ASUU leadership to urgently resolve the dispute and restore normal academic activities.

The latest strike adds to concerns about disruptions within Nigeria’s public university system, where industrial actions have historically affected academic schedules and delayed students’ graduation timelines.

As of the time of filing this report, no official date had been announced for the suspension of the strike, while efforts toward resolving the dispute were ongoing.
