Pope Leo XIV has criticised the exploitation of Africa’s natural resources by foreign interests, warning that such practices are fueling violence and deepening poverty across the continent.

Speaking to thousands in Cameroon, the pontiff called for urgent reforms and stronger leadership.

The head of the Catholic Church, Pope Leo XIV, has raised fresh concerns over the continued exploitation of Africa’s wealth by foreign entities, describing it as a major driver of poverty and instability.

Addressing a crowd of approximately 20,000 people during his visit to Cameroon, the Pope said profits derived from Africa’s natural resources are often diverted into funding weapons, thereby escalating conflicts in various parts of the continent.

According to him, the cycle of extraction and profit-taking by external actors has left many African nations struggling with underdevelopment despite their vast mineral and natural resource wealth.

He further urged African leaders to take decisive steps against corruption, which he described as a key enabler of exploitation. The Pope emphasised the need for unity among nations on the continent, noting that collective action is essential to safeguard resources and promote sustainable development.

Observers say the Pope’s remarks reflect long-standing global concerns about the relationship between resource wealth and conflict in Africa, particularly in regions rich in oil, minerals, and other valuable commodities.

His message comes amid ongoing debates about economic sovereignty, fair trade, and the role of international corporations in Africa’s development trajectory.
