The Scientific Equipment Development Institute (SEDI), Minna, Niger State, has pledged to provide scientific equipment, laboratory materials and manpower training support to Akawe Torkula Polytechnic in a move aimed at strengthening science and technical education.
The commitment was made on Tuesday during an assessment visit to the institution by the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of SEDI, Engr. Dr. Jafaru O. Mahmud.
According to Dr. Mahmud, the partnership forms part of SEDI’s contribution toward advancing Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education in line with Federal Government policy objectives.
He stated that the institute would support the polytechnic in meeting requirements for accreditation by the National Board for Technical Education during future assessment exercises.
Dr. Mahmud further disclosed that the intervention would commence with the provision of science laboratory equipment, followed by capacity-building programmes for staff and students in renewable energy and other technical fields.
He noted that the initiative is intended to help the institution strengthen practical education and equip students with technical skills for self-reliance.
Speaking during the visit, Rector of the institution, Dr. Martins Agena, said the engagement followed his earlier visit to SEDI in Minna last year, where discussions on collaboration and institutional support reportedly began.
According to him, the partnership could create opportunities for students and lecturers to undertake practical exposure visits to SEDI facilities in Minna.
Also speaking, Deputy Rector (Academics) and Chairperson of the organising committee, Dr. Philomena Odeh-Udeh, said the initiative aligns with the science and technical education priorities of Hyacinth Alia in Benue State.
The SEDI delegation also conducted a physical assessment of facilities within the institution and reportedly signed a Memorandum of Understanding outlining areas of collaboration and intervention.
