The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has inaugurated the Board of the National Pension Commission (PenCom), urging members to uphold transparency and accountability while strengthening Nigeria’s pension system.

The inauguration marks a renewed effort by the Federal Government to reinforce pension administration and safeguard the retirement savings of public servants in line with the Pension Reform Act 2014.

Speaking at the ceremony, Akume said the Board’s mandate includes providing strategic direction, policy guidance and effective oversight of the Commission.

He stressed that the government remains committed to building a transparent and resilient pension system that inspires public trust.

The SGF also warned members against interfering in operational matters, noting that such actions could undermine established governance structures.

He reaffirmed the commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to addressing outstanding pension liabilities and ensuring retirees receive their entitlements promptly.

The Board is chaired by Dr Opeyemi Agbaje, alongside representatives from key institutions including labour unions, the Central Bank of Nigeria, Securities and Exchange Commission, and other stakeholders.

“Your mandate is very clear. You are to provide strategic direction, policy guidance and effective oversight,” Akume said.

Responding, Agbaje assured the government of the Board’s commitment to integrity and sound governance.

“We are fully aligned with the principles of accountability and corporate governance,” he stated.

PenCom Director-General, Omolola Oloworaran, also pledged a productive working relationship with the Board to enhance institutional performance.
